Ladies, your Viagra has arrived. No seriously, it’s euphemistically called that but it works on the brain, not the female nether regions. The drug is called Addyi, chemical name fibanserin. It’s a pretty pink pill but comes packed with a strong warning. It works by influencing your brain to get sexy. Calling it the ‘female Viagra’ is a misnomer. Viagra directs blood flow into the penis. Addyi was formerly designed as an anti-depression medication to promote dopamine release. As I mentioned yesterday, the spot for sexual desire and food satisfaction share real estate in the brain. How’s that for repurposing a drug? Strong warnings advise that this drug may cause low blood pressure, drowsiness, and fainting. Addyi shouldn’t be taken with alcohol, in lieu of the aforementioned side effects. The drug is designed for premenopausal women who suffer distress, due to a lack of sex drive. Isn’t it interesting how this molecule effects the brain to stimulate sexuality in women? Viagra is totally different in the mechanism of action for men. Women need to get their head into it.
